Frequently asked questions
Straight answers to what patients ask us most.
Acupuncture is a form of traditional medicine, practised for over two thousand years, in which very fine sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body. It is recognised by the World Health Organization and used in hospitals and clinics worldwide alongside modern medicine to support the body’s own regulation of pain, metabolism, circulation, sleep and stress.
From a traditional view, it restores the balance and flow of the body’s energy along pathways called meridians. From a modern view, needling stimulates nerves, muscles and connective tissue, which influences the nervous system, blood flow and the release of the body’s own pain-regulating and anti-inflammatory chemicals. At GADAOC we use both perspectives to plan your care.
Most adults and children can. Please tell us if you are pregnant, have a bleeding disorder, take blood thinners, have a pacemaker or implant, or have a skin infection at a treatment area — the practitioner will adapt the plan or advise otherwise.
No. Acupressure uses finger pressure on the same points without needles; physiotherapy uses exercise and manual therapy. Acupuncture uses needles at precise points and is planned around a diagnosis of your whole condition, not only the painful area.
SEREON is GADAOC’s AI appointment assistant on WhatsApp. It answers in your language, checks available slots and confirms your booking in a few taps — any time of day. See how it works or message SEREON now.
Very fine, single-use sterile needles are placed at specific points on the body and left in place for a short period while you rest. Most people feel little more than a light tap or a dull, warm sensation.
Usually not. The needles are much thinner than injection needles. You may feel a brief pinch or a mild ache at some points, which settles within seconds.
Longer than a follow-up. Your first appointment includes a detailed consultation about your history, lifestyle and reports, an examination, and your first session. Follow-up visits are shorter.
It depends on the condition and how long you have had it. We give you a realistic plan after the first consultation and review it as you progress, rather than promising a fixed number.
No. Never stop, reduce or change prescribed medicines without your doctor’s advice. Acupuncture at GADAOC works alongside your medical treatment, and our diabetologist reviews the medical side of diabetes and metabolic plans.
Diabetes and its complications, weight, thyroid, pain and joint problems, neurological conditions, skin, fertility, stress and sleep, sports injuries and more. See the full list in the Conditions section above.
Yes, when carried out by a trained practitioner with sterile, single-use needles. Side effects are uncommon and usually minor — slight bruising or tiredness after a session.
